Inconel 718 vs Stainless Steel 316: Which is the Better Option?

Inconel 718 is a nickel-chromium alloy that's known for its exceptional strength at high temperatures and excellent corrosion resistance. Inconel 718 AMS 5664 is commonly used in the aerospace, nuclear, and chemical processing industries. Stainless Steel 316, on the other hand, is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel that's widely used in the marine and chemical industries due to its excellent corrosion resistance.

Both Inconel 718 and stainless steel 316 materials exhibit excellent corrosion resistance. However, Stainless Steel S31600 / 1.4436 is better suited for applications involving chloride ions, such as those found in saltwater environments. Inconel 718 UNS N07718, on the other hand, is more resistant to oxidizing environments and can withstand extreme temperatures up to 1300 degree F.

In terms of strength, Inconel alloy 718 material is the clear winner. It's known for its exceptional strength at high temperatures and can withstand extreme conditions without losing its mechanical properties. SS 316, while also strong, isn't as robust as Inconel N07718. It's best suited for applications that don't require high strength but still need good corrosion resistance.

2.4668 Inconel 718 is more expensive than UNS S31600 due to its unique properties and high nickel content. If cost is a major concern, Stainless 316 material could be a more budget-friendly option. Our supplier can provide both Inconel 718 Pipe and SS 316 Pipe with free samples. 316 Stainless Steel is easier to machine than Inconel Stainless Steel 718. Alloy 718's unique properties make it difficult to cut and machine, which can increase lead times and production costs.

If you need a material that can withstand extreme temperatures and has exceptional strength, then nickel Inconel 718 is the better option. If you're working in the marine or chemical industries and need a material with excellent corrosion resistance, 1.4401 Stainless Steel 316 is the way to go.
